Create your own papier-mâché figures in preparation for Día de Muertos. The art of Cartonería, or papier-mâché, has a long and rich history in Mexico and is a tradition of Día de Muertos.
Each workshop participant will choose from a calaca (skeleton), la Catrina (fancy lady skeleton), an alebrije (fantastical animal), or a wearable sugar skull (calavera) mask. Once formed, the figures need a day to dry before decorating.
Day 1 (10/8): Participants will form an armature of foil and create their figure/mask using papier-mâché clay. Learn about the different histories of each style of Cartonería as you work. We will share papier-mâché recipes and instructions so you may make additional figures at home.
Day 2 (10/10): Decorate and embellish your dried figures and masks. Learn about the significance of colors displayed during Día de Muertos, along with the meanings behind some of the decorative patterns and elements used.
Then, bring your Catrinas back to the Arts Council for the Parade of Catrinas and Día de Muertos celebration on November 1.
Paper mâché (part 1) and basic decorating materials (part 2) are provided. Participants are strongly encouraged to add their own decorative elements to their work.
Allergen alert: The paper mâché and armature contains aluminum foil, wheat, corn starch, and premixed dry wall joint compound. We will not be offering alternative materials.
