Presented by Astrid McGuire, Class of 2024
Big Sky Haikus is a project presented by Lone Peak High School student Astrid McGuire. This public art installation is designed to bring students and locals together to convey what the Big Sky community and area means to them. Local students in 1st - 8th grade were prompted with the question “What does Big Sky mean to you?”, each responding with a three-lined haiku poem. Ten poems from the students were selected to be put on a plaque and installed on local trailhead signs around the community for visitors and locals to read. We hope that visitors can observe these plaques and gain a more meaningful understanding and experience of our community as a whole.
This project also involved the collaboration of the Arts Council of Big Sky and the Big Sky Community Organization. The Arts Council helped design and funded the ten plaques and the BSCO made it possible to place the signs at the trailheads.
Ashley Jenks, Big Sky School District’s librarian, also donated her class time for a haiku lesson and workshop for each class from 1st through 8th grade students, and provided a supportive environment for such a project to all ages.
